RE: New Dometic Recall Initiated March 11, 2008

Had my kit installed today. Repair facility came to the trailer (just over 1 mile from his shop) to install the parts. Cost me $40.00 for the service call. Is that normal? Were those who took their trailers to the dealers charged labor for the install? I called Dometic to ask about the labor charge but they were already closed. Only took the mechanic about 30 minutes to make the installation.
I had my fridge fitted with the recall stuff today and asked the company owner what happens in your situation. He said Dometic supplies the parts and gives him $40 to install them. It takes him about 20 minutes to put it in since he's installed hundreds of them. In the case of park models and other rvs that can't be brought in to the shop, Dometic will reimburse him $60 for a service call above the labor to install elsewhere. Anything over that is the customer's responsibility. He takes the $60 for anything less than 10 miles from the shop and charges .50 per mile after that.
Figure your $40 overage into that scenario. I'd say you were ripped off so call him on that one!
BTW there was no charge for mine.

RE: I may have broke more than I fix on my Norcold fridge

Is your burner tube getting warm on AC? If not, get a volt/ohm meter and check the continuity on the AC contacts on the tube. (disconnect the AC first) Then connect the AC and check for voltage on the contacts that plug into the tube. Go from there.

RE: transmission problems (I think)

I'll elaborate on what SKnight said....That roaring noise sounds like your cooling fan clutch engaging which may mimic the sound of your engine revving. It is a fluid coupling at the center of the engine fan. Most of the couplings have small fins on them. In normal temps it allows the fan to free wheel to save gas. Excessive heat from the radiator will cause it to engage and force a lot more air through the radiator until your engine cools down. Ascending a steep grade will cause that to happen and is a normal function.

RE: 1999 Damon Daybreak Front Brake Problems

My Ford manual recommends brake fluid changes/flushes every 20,000 miles which I do along with yearly slider maintenance and lube and pad inspection. Yours is 9 years old with a lot of sitting around. Not knowing a complete history of the previous owner's chassis' maintenance you're way over due for some preventive maintenance before you ruin your rotors.

RE: Cleveland OH - Place to Camp/Park

Thanks - your reply is extremely helpful. I lived in Bay Village for a few years in the 90s but at that time RV's and camping were not on my radar screen! Do you think the Walmart in North Olmstead is accomadating to RVs? I also saw a campground in North Ridgeville called Crystal Springs - do you know anything about it?
I'd ask first...N. Olmsted WallyWorld: 440-979-9234.
North east New Hampshire mountains are some of the most beautiful places I've vacationed in.
Have a safe trip

RE: airflow over motor

Above my radiator there is a rubber flap that seals the 3" gap between it and the coach body. I fold this flap up in the summer to allow the air to flow over the inside of the doghouse and back down in the winter to prevent it. Ford V-10 chassis. Check yours-it may be a freebie.

RE: Cleveland OH - Place to Camp/Park

I was a police officer in Cleveland for 28 years and there is NO location in the city where I would close my eyes for more than a few minutes.
Neither Cleveland nor the near suburbs in Cuyahoga County have an rv campground I am aware of. I would suggest a Walmart in the outer suburbs depending on the direction you're traveling. You may have to drive 30 or 40 minutes to find one but it's time well spent.

RE: Dealer Prep Charges

When I bought mine one dealer (Clay's RV) wrote it up with a whopping $600 prep charge and the other dealer (Lewis RV) said the factory paid them for it. Needless to say I ordered mine with the honest one who was a few thou$and cheaper regardless of the gouging.
You did good by asking on the forum so finish your homework and ask the factory or another dealer.

RE: fridge don t work but freezer does

I had that happen to me while traveling on propane.
CW told me the orifice on the gas burner has a ruby pressed in and a laser cuts a precise diameter hole in it for the gas flame. What happened in my case was the ruby came loose and the flame was much smaller than it should have been. Being that the freezer gets cold first in an absorption refrig, only the freezer worked. The whole thing worked fine on 120 volts.
I had tried blowing the orifice out with compressed air to no avail. I'm guessing if a spider leg was blocking it that may have worked but not in my case; had to have it replaced for about $30 + labor.
Let us know what your trouble shooting reveals.

RE: Fantastic Fan issues

My experience:
The wires that go to the switch that shuts the fan off when the lid closes are either loose or corroded. Bumps in the road will cause it to make and break contact. It's a common problem with FF.

RE: Front Window Leak

I would say that any clearance light problem will leak down inside a wall and show up on the floor, not a bed.
I would say that any clearance light problem will leak down inside a wall until it hits a window then soak the mattress that is against the wall below it.
That is not speculating on how gravity works, that is a life experience.

RE: Front Window Leak

That booger should be under warranty yet but if it's not convenient to take in I'd remove the window, clean the opening, stick on some butyl tape and re-install. Wait a week or so and let it ooze out then cut the excess off and run a neat bead of caulk around the perimeter.
Just in case, take off the front and rear running lights and re-seal them also since they are a frequent source of leaks and can mock a window leak.
All of the above should only take a few hours of your time.

RE: Battery - two 12V's or two 6V's

I believe the general consensus is 2 6v over 2 12v because they last longer, are cheaper and generally have more amp hours. There will be other opinions so don't hold me to that.

Don't miss going to Mammoth Hot Springs up north. There is a huge elk herd that lives in the city. What a site to see. The springs themselves are so-so compared to the geysers etc.

RE: AC problem carrier v

I think you're missing a baffle up there. I can't see the blower on mine. And the filters are supposed to have air go up only, not both directions. It may be dealer time.

RE: Can you help? Weight concerns with a 1999 Damon Daybreak?

I've got a similar sized Daybreak on a 15,700# chassis.
Fully loaded for a trip with 2 adults, clothes and food for 2 weeks, full water, propane and gas tanks and all the extras we may have thought we would need, we weighed in at 15,400#.
In my opinion if you just take the people without luggage, water, food you will be ok figuring on hauling average sized people. I would also heed Gale's suggestion of weight disbursement throughout the mh.

RE: AC problem carrier v

I have a Carrier Air-V ducted unit. Like you say, there is no where for the air to exit the unit at the unit, just the ceiling ducts...there are only slide-in filters on the unit. So where is your a/c coming from? If it's coming from the filters there is something wrong up there. Take the filter housing off after removing the filters, 4 screws in the perimeter plastic and investigate. Let us know what you find.

RE: Reduced Volume w/Digital Converter

Mine's reduced also...I've got a Wally World Magnavox and there is no volume control on it.
That brings up another question; I need both hands for the two remotes so how do I eat popcorn?
